Have you taken the district sponsored MCI Awareness class (or not!) and want to know what to do now?? Well, Wednesday June 25th at 6:30pm at SVMC will be the time and place for you to answer this question. That evening, we will have an EMS-only small scale drill. Actually we are expecting our friends from the MedQuest camp to provide 15-20 patients to be triaged for us to conduct a drill so it may not be small for the quantity of patients. We will put our plan to a test, as well as what we have learned through the awareness education combined with the acquisition of our MCI management kits. It sounds like it is going to be a good time, and a very important learning experience. You need NOT have completed the MCI awareness class to attend, so if you or your squad are going to participate, contact Chris Phelps at phec@phin.org so plans can be made.
In January of this year the District board formed the MCI committee to research and then develop a plan that would be utilized by all District #12 services. Since January, the MCI Committee (comprised of Chris Phelps, Inge Luce, Bobby Maynard, Kevin Mattison, Greg Gould, Bill Hathaway and Kathy Flavin) has been hard at work developing our plan that is near completion. Once completed and adopted by the District board the plan will be distributed to all services within the district for the education process to begin. Our district wide plan is designed to contain an unbelievably large amount of information needed should an MCI occur, yet that information will be easily understood by all. This understanding is accomplished by simply understanding the plan and attending the education that has been designed to fit our plan. The link below will allow you to view the draft plan. Now that the plan is complete, it will go before the district board on August 2nd for their blessing on initiating the plan. Keep in mind this is a living document, which means there will be constant changes to some of the information, however the basic purpose and framework of the plan will remain intact. Please take some time and print out or read this plan. It is imperative that all district providers are familiar with the plan and the information contained with in.

The Education component allows the providers to understand the plan so they may perform the tasks it outlines. While trying to not create a lot of work for ourselves, we have been aided by the State of Virginia who has supplied a lot of their information and concepts, for our use to adapt to District 12’s plan. We have developed a 2.5 hour class called MCI Awareness. Just as the title suggests it is simply an Awareness of MCI management, yet touches on quite a few areas. The emphasis of the education covers the following: Overview of District 12 MCI plan Defining an MCI Overview of Incident command system (ICS) Incorporating EMS into the ICS, during an MCI START/JUMPSTART Triage system education Triage/Categorization drill While it seems like a lot, we have sufficiently incorporated all this information into a 2.5 hour class, a class that may become mandatory for all providers in the future. We hope all providers will attend this training, as it sets the foundation for the use of our district wide plan. We are currently working on “MCI Operations” education, which will expand upon some of the topics listed above, as well as incorporate more education needed for those who choose to learn more about MCI management. We have had about 20 District providers attend this education thus far and the reviews have come back very positive. This is a work in progress, so stay tuned for changes and additions to our District 12 MCI plan and education and we strongly encourage you to attend this education when offered.
